The name of Roeino comes from the anagram of the greek word “oreino”, meaning mountainous. The village is located on the foothills of Mount Mainalo at an altitude of 1,100m with only 60 residents. It is built inside a pine tree forest and it is 19km away from Tripoli and only 4km from Vytina.
Roeino is a traditional village with houses built with stone and wood. It is a popular destination for those who like mountaineering and hiking, since it is near the Lintini top, the second in height top of mount Mainalo. In addition, it offers lovely excursions to the pine tree forest.
In Roeino, you will find the church of Agios Georgios (St. Georgios), patron saint of the village, built in the 12th century after the discovery of the miraculous icon of the saint. Today, the church scarcely reminds of a byzantine church due to the alterations and additions made over the centuries. In the northern side of Agios Georgios, there is the church of Agios Dimitrios (St. Dimitrios), from the 13th century, with rare murals from the 15th and 16th century, as well as a fountain from 1888. In St. Georgios’ day the village has a big festival with greek folk music and food.
Over the last years, the village has been experiencing an economic growth due to land acquisition mainly by foreigners for house construction.
