TL;DR

A small town near Nafplio, inhabited since ancient times. It is near many archaeological sites such as Ancient Epidaurus, and it has a great Museum.

A small town of 2,482 residents, built on an altitude of 370 metres, 23.6 kilometres northeast of Nafplio. The area was inhabited since ancient times, and modern Lygourio is built near where the ancient city of Lissa was. The first mention of the modern name was during the 14th century, proving that it has remained unchanged from the various conquerors and rulers of the area. Its residents took an active part in the Revolution of 1821, participating in the Siege of Palamidi.

Lygourio is in a beautiful, verdant location, and also the nearest settlement to the theatre of Ancient Epidaurus; as such, it has many visitors every year. Other than the archaeological site and the theatre, where every summer great plays are performed with huge success, the area has more sights from different points in history, since it has been inhabited for thousands of years. Noteworthy are the ruins of Ancient Lissi, since parts of its wall survive to this day, as well as a Mycenaean pyramid and 12 picturesque Byzantine chapels in the surrounding area.

Also noteworthy is the Museum of Natural History of Kotsiomytis, named after its greatest contributor, with a collection of findings from Greece and the rest of the world. A large part of the fossil collections has been found in the area around Lygourio, which has much geological value and interest.
