TL;DR

A small village of 75 residents, with an amazing mountainous scenery.

Corfiotissa is a hill village of 75 residents, located about 18km southwest of Xylokastro, at an altitude of 710m above sea level. It belongs in a group of villages in the area, that have Arvanitic origins. Its older name was “Koutsi”. According to historical evidence, the village was founded in the mid 18th century. The surrounding area is exceptionally beautiful, as the landscape is dominated by the mountainous scenery of the place. It has many caves and chasms, the most famous of which being the Gorge of Fonissa (meaning “ murderess”), which starts from Corfiotissa mountain, and ends at the Corinthian Gulf, to the east of Kato Loutro. The Church of Agios Nikolaos (“Saint Nikolaos”) is also located in the village of Corfiotissa, and it contains a rather remarkable and artistic wood carved iconostasis. The church is speculated to be very old, and that it was originally a monastery. More specifically, it is theorized that it was once a glebe of the Monastery of Agia Lavra or the Megalo Spilaio Monastery.
