The Geraneia mountain is located in the east section of the Corinthian region, north of Loutraki. Its boundaries extend up to the western Attica region (mount Pater at Megara), and its endpoints reach the Cape of Cholmi in the Corinthian Gulf. The highest altitude of the mountain range reaches up to 1.369m above sea level, it's highest peak being that of “Makriplagi” (meaning “long slope”). The peaks “Megali Ntouskia” (1.068m) and “Pintiza” are also well-known. Its borders reach the fabled Skironides Petres shore (“skiron's rocks”), nowadays called “Kakia Skala” (meaning “bad stairway”).

The mountain is often mentioned in ancient sources, and there are two theories about the way it got its name. Firstly, it is speculated that the name comes from the cranes that saved the life of Zeus's son Megaros from the Storm of Deykalion, keeping him safe in the steep mountain. Pausanias believed that the name comes from the shape of the Megara, which resembles the neck of a crane at its endpoints (hence “Geranos”, the greek word for “crane”).

Even though it is considered “scorned” by climbers and hikers due to it being close to the capital, the mountain contains a vast ecological identity. It has therefore been made a part of the Natura 2000 Protected Habitats, while the region of Platanos-Parthi-Miloi has been deemed a Nature Reserve. Over 950 species of plants thrive in the area, and it also houses tens of species of endangered animals. Its eastern section is lush with grasslands, and its higher reaches are full of fir tree forests. Geologically, the composition of the mountain shows how ancient it is, because it is composed of calcareous and volcanic minerals. Its age is estimated to be about 230-285 million years old. The mountain is ideal for hiking, as there are many paths with well-placed signs.

At an altitude of 1.150m, visitors can find the monastery of “Panagia Faneromeni” (meaning “The Virgin Mary Revealed”) in Prathi (also called Prarthi and Pournani). The monastery of “Osios Patapios” (650m), which is close to Loutraki, is also famous. The Geraneia are also the source of the fresh-water springs of Loutraki, which is renowned for its healing properties.
