TL;DR

A monastery on a verdant plateau, dedicated to Panagia, celebrating in the 15th of August, used as a boarding house by the Metropolis of Amaliada.

The Monastery of Fragkavilla is 1.5 kilometres from Amaliada, and is a Byzantine monastery that today is used as boarding house of the Metropolis (a Greek Orthodox religious jurisdictional unit and central church) of Amaliada.

The monastery is built on a verdant plateau, dedicated to Panagia (Virgin Mary), built in the 11th century. It is decorated with beautiful murals and belongs to the cross-shaped style with a dome supported by four columns. Today, the architecture of the church has been altered by later additions. The monastery has survived a fire that burned some of its inner area, destroying part of the murals, during a Turkish raid.

The name of the monastery comes from a Frankish title holder that trespassed in the monastery’s land and built his mansion. It celebrates in the 15th of August, as do most churches dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
